Why Cheap Rabbit Hutches Are a False Economy: A First-Hand Account
At Garden Woodcraft, we take great pride in creating robust, durable, and RSPCA-recommended rabbit hutches, designed to keep your pets safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, during a recent delivery of one of our 6-foot, UK-made hutches, we came across a troubling sight: a relatively new flat-pack hutch, made in China, that had failed spectacularly. What we saw reinforced everything we’ve been warning pet owners about when it comes to choosing budget hutches. Here’s the story.
A Hutch That Rabbits Couldn’t Resist (Literally)
The hutch in question was just a few weeks old and looked fairly sturdy at first glance. But on closer inspection, the flaws were glaring. Made of Chinese Fir wood, this hutch presented itself as an all-you-can-eat buffet for the rabbits. Unlike the durable, treated wood we use in our hutches, Chinese Fir is incredibly soft and appetising to rabbits.
In this particular instance, the rabbits didn’t just chew on the corners, as you might expect. They went straight for the flat panels, creating a massive hole in the end panel (as shown in the images). This behaviour isn’t unusual when hutches are made with such poor-quality wood. We’ve replaced countless Chinese-made hutches over the years and have seen this happen time and again.
Flimsy Construction That Puts Pets at Risk
The issues didn’t stop at the wood. The bolts used in this hutch were made of aluminium—a material more suited to internal doors, where structural stability is constant. On a hutch that’s exposed to the British climate, with constant expansion and contraction of materials, the bolts quickly misaligned, compromising the hutch’s security. A misaligned bolt might not seem like a big deal, but it can mean the difference between keeping your rabbits safe or letting predators find a way in.
Speaking of predators, the wire mesh on this hutch was another disaster waiting to happen. The wide gauge allowed easy access for rats, and the way the mesh was fitted—in grooves within the wooden frames—made it vulnerable. As the rabbits chewed on the frames, they exposed the wire further, weakening its structure. All it takes is one push from a determined fox, and the wire gives way.
Flat-Pack Hutch Problems Are All Too Common
Unfortunately, this story is far from unique. Cheap, flat-pack hutches made from budget materials are marketed as affordable solutions, but they often lead to heartbreaking outcomes. They might last a year or two at best, but during that time, they pose a constant risk to your pets’ safety and well-being. From weather damage to predator access, these hutches are simply not fit for purpose.

Don’t Be Fooled by Low Prices
The images we’ve shared tell a story that’s all too familiar. A hutch that seemed like a bargain ended up being a waste of money, requiring an urgent replacement to protect the rabbits. In the end, a cheap hutch is no bargain if it puts your pets at risk and costs more to replace over time.
At Garden Woodcraft, we believe that your rabbits deserve the best. Don’t settle for flimsy, unsafe, and short-lived solutions. Choose a hutch that’s built to last, giving you peace of mind and your rabbits the home they deserve.
